Class AZ (Any truck/tractor trailer combination)

What you get

  • The full Class A truck licence is the only licence that covers full air brake systems on both tractors and trailers.
  • A mandatory entry-level training course must be successfully completed before attempting the Class A road test.
  • As of July 1, 2022, the type of transmission in the vehicle you use for your road test will determine what types of Class A trucks you can drive in Ontario.

Mandatory entry-level training will include at least 103.5 hours of instruction and cover the entry-level knowledge and skills needed to safely operate a large truck on Ontario’s roads.

Once you’ve completed the training, your driving record will be updated automatically and the training will be valid for life.

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Hold a valid Ontario G License or higher
  • Complete the MTO-approved Medical Form
  • Pass MTO Written Test (Knowledge Test) (40 questions; 20 Class D and 20 Road Signs, Traffic Laws and Regulations)

A Class A licence does not allow you to drive a bus carrying passengers, a motorcycle or a moped. A full Class AZ (air brake endorsement) truck licence lets you drive;

  • Any truck/tractor trailer combination
  • A combination of motor vehicle and towed vehicles where the towed vehicles exceed a total gross weight of 4,600 kg (10,000 lbs) and has air brakes
  • A vehicle pulling double trailers
  • A car or light truck covered by a Class G licence
  • A heavy trucks covered by the Class D truck licence
  • Any vehicle covered under a restricted Class A truck licence

What you get

  • A Class D license will allow you to operate and drive straight or articulated trucks to transport goods and materials.
  • You will be responsible for ensuring the safety and security of the cargo and must have good communication skills to receive and relay information to a centralized dispatcher.
  • A career as a commercial driver can offer you stable employment and can provide long-term financial security.
  • Operators with this license may operate any truck like straight trucks, dump trucks, cement trucks, or motor vehicle combinations exceeding 11,000 kg provided the towed vehicle is not over 4,600 kg, and may also operate class G vehicles.

Class Z (Air Brake Endorsement)

What you get

  • If you want to drive a vehicle with an air brake or an air-over-hydraulic brake system, you need a Z endorsement on your driver’s licence in Ontario.
  • Topstone Career College provides a certified instructor that will conduct the 12 hours of the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) approved Air Brake Endorsement Course.
  • Most commercial trucks use an air brake system in order to operate. The Air Brake Endorsement course is necessary for those who want to be qualified for the A, B, C, and D licenses.
  • You will learn about the air brake system components. Inspection requirements and troubleshooting of the air brake system are the major components of this program.
  • Upon the successful completion of the program, the students will be required to visit a Drive Test centre to have the “Z” endorsement placed on their license.

  • Performing a routine inspection of the air brake system and its components
  • A 20-question written test will be administered at the end of the course. Upon successful completion of the written test, a practical examination will also be conducted on a tractor-trailer.
  • After the course, You will receive a referral envelope. Take the envelope to a DriveTest centre within 6 months to get your air brake endorsement.
